Blog# 12:

What kinds of catastrophes, natural or man-made, could have brought about the destruction of an entire civilization, sending it back to a primitive state, like that of Gathering Blue?

Use as many pronouns as you can, but be sure the antecedent is written first.

  1. I think catastrophes that could end the world besides the sun burning out are not apparent in our day and age. I also think that one man or womens life can be set back very easily with the rest of the world moving on. For example when kira lost her moter. she did not do anything for four days. the world moved on but she did not. There are many otheer reasons like falling in love or losing a loved one. So I think catastostrophes in this world are possible but not likely. Catastrophes in one persons life happen all around us all of the time. tyver Butler

  2. Many things could have caused distruction. Volcano, earthquake, flood, hurricane, or an avalanche. But if you think about the story, you can cross out some of these things. For example, they said that there were toxic gases.
    Volcano: probuably
Earthquake: maybe, from the center of the earth, if it was really strong
Flood: it's only water how could it give off gas?
    Hurricane: it's only air
Avalanche: covering the whole world? don't make me laugh

so as you can see, we can count out floods, hurricanes, and avalanches. That leaves us with either a volcano or an earthquake. Usually, I would think that an earthquake couldn't be that big, wiping out a whole civilization, but there could have been a whole series of earthquakes. And volcanos... they diffinately have toxic gases, and they do alot of damage. There could have a been either one big volcano, a series at one time, or a series at extended periods of time. But as you can probuably tell by now, we really don't know what could have caused so much distruction. Who knows if the book will ever tell us? Maybe more hints?

  4. Something that destroys an entire civilization is the weather. Some weather is really bad and you wouldn't be able to do much. There could also be a storm that can tour the whole thing apart leaving many people homeless. Those people wouldn't have anywhere to go or know what to do next. And that's how weather can destroy a civilization

  5. Some catastrophes man could have made to make the village fall apart ar estuff that could happen in government such as citizens not agreeing with the leader. Some man-made diasters that have destroyed the civilazation are natural diasters, such as earthquakes or tornados.

  6. A hurricane. That is very destrustive. It causes alot of damage. Like in Gathering Blue. I think also a war.

  7. Well, that is hard to say since it has never happened in known history where a civilization completely goes back to a primitive state. But, I would think that some kind of a war that brings out multiple nuclear bombs could completely wipe out human life. I hope that that does not happen during our lifetime! But, if there was a GIANT atroid/meteor, like the one that theoretically wiped out the dinosaurs, we could all die from the aftershock earthquakes, the original meteor, or some kind of a tidal wav. It would kill us all!!!!! So, we could all die anyday!!! Tell your friends you appreciate them, and your family what they mean to you, because who knows when you won't get that chance again...

  9. So, the catastrophe I thought of to bring us back to the primitive state would be a meter shower hit the earth only hitting the avalible resorces that we use today. Leaving behind few churches, multiple forests, and other natural resorces, this also included books. Think how this would effect our lives alot going from tall skysrapers to little cottages with dirt floors and no life. this would make people go crazy! and just get out of hand.

  10. I feel that if the world was going to end it would be a nucular explotion that cut off most resources. the nucular explotion would leave select few "stations".The chemical would only destroy mental based things leaving only wooden churches ,trees and steams. This would destroy most underground things but not all pipe lines. this would kill almost all leaving less than 200 survivors.

  11. In gathering blue kira is in a dirty village where you die in the field if you do the littlest thing. Kira in her case she had a birth defect and she was going to be taken away but her mother wouldn't let her and the reason thet the civilization is so small is because there is too many deaths.

  12. The people could have got hurt from flood or, climate change. it would take a really long to rebuild the town. it would take years to rebuild all the destruction.

  13. Something like a flood or climate change could have killed the poeple and all their knowlege for civilization. There could have been a poisoning in the water or food that the poeple consumed also. Anything could have happened that caused great distruction in the village. Those are just a few possiblities of what could have happened that made the village end up the way it did.

  14. What the man made problem to put us back into the primitive state would be 911 all over the world made by two people in a plane driving into buildings all over the world. It was an anti animal booming so the animals and us stayed alive they destroyed forests, and buildings. So, the people had to make cotts out of straw and animal skin. The people had to wear what the Indians would wear like animal skins. So, eventually we had to eat the meat of that animal. The worlds would have to combine as one to work together.

  15. the way that an entire civilization can go back into its premitave state is a flood, fire, really big illness (like the yellow fever)
or a big war in the the civilization.

  16. Have you ever seen the movie "Knowing"??? Its a great movie, and in it there the main character discovers that the world is going to end because of a natural disaster that no one could escape. The disaster was that there would be a large flare of hot gas and fire shooting from the sun that would reach (and pass) the earth ripping through the atmosphere and killing every living thing on earth. But these alien/angel things took two children and took them from the earth. They placed them on what i think we guess to be on the garden of eden (in the bible) to start over. It never showed what happened to the earth (the end was the two children running through the garden of eden), but i think maybe some of the things on the other side of the earth were not so badly destroyed (meaning maybe thats why they still have the church an stuff) and the two children started civilization all over again... leading into gathering blue. (another thing that makes "Knowing" a good comparison is that some of the main characters are very religious, and in gathering blue they worship the cross)

  17. I dont ever think that will happen because most people know modern science by heart and will not forget it. If everyone dies then i dont think that new people will be made...just that all of our previous buildings and structures will fall and the earth will turn back into...earth

  18. I think that a bunch of natural disasters brought on the destruction. Giant earthquakes, a giant flood like in the movie 2012 could of done that. Then, if nobody survives the destruction, everybody will forget everything about that civilization and the PEOPLE and how to do things THEY did.

  20. In order to destroy an entire civilization, I think there would need to be a series of natural catastrophes, like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, etc. THEY would send the world into war, because of lack of resources and panic. WE would wind up destroying each other, causeing our civilizaton to disapear.

  21. The kind of catastrophes I think that destroys the world is like 2012 "the movie". I think it will happen in 2012 with natural meteors, floods, and volcano activitys. I think the man-made destrucions are pollution in the water and food.

  23. In Gathering Blue the book leads you to believe that the civilization before THEM was destroyed by something massive. I think the civilization may have been destroyed by a tsunami, hurricane, or maybe even an earthquake. However I think an earthquake was the main reason because if THEY had high buildings THEY could fall on everything and everyone. Or all three of these events (earthquake, hurricane, or tsunami) could have happened all at once causing a major problem.

  24. A volcanic eruption is a natural disasters that can destroy an entire civilization. Like in Pompei, Italy. There they had a huge eruption, and most of the people died. But they didnt die of the lava, they died from the poisonous fumes that came fron the volcanoe.

  25. I think the worst way to wipe out a civilazation making it start over is nucular war or just war in genral. It can be really bad or just flat out wipe out socity. Some times it can be good. Well for pepole that win. No one wants to die. Well thats it.

Some type of disasters that I think could have caused the devestation was a tzianami(spelling??) or a massive earthquake. THAT would be very hard to recover from. IT would take a long time just to clean up the mess. With all the memory lost it would be very hard to reinvent everything as it took over 2000 years for us. As Mrs.Montrose said how much could you recreate if you where left alone on a new world.

I agree with Madison 100% because I thought she said what she said great.

  27. One catastrophe that could cause the world to be destroyed could be an earthquake. IT would probably start out only affecting the places that are located where the tectonic plates meet. Although IT would soon spread to the rest of the earth effecting everything and everyone that IT passes. Distruction as massive as an earthquake could cause everything that WE have now to be distroyed and we would have to start civilization all over from square one.

  28. If there was event like the event "2012" (which of course isn't gonna happen) could definitely do so. It would scare a lot of people for sure. It would make them all panic as well. It would take a lot of time to rebuild the civilization back to he high quality its at now.

  29. There are many different kinds of catastrophes. An example of a natural caused one is if an asteroid hit the earth, and destroyed parts of it, or even a small village. It would effect that place severely. Places that it hit would have to rebuild a lot and would probably have to start old customs, like preparing for something else like that, or it could send it back to the primitive state. A man made catastrophe could be something a dam breaking, or deforestation. If forests were cut down by man, many animals would be forced to come to villages, and if a dam broke, the water could destroy many things, like places, homes, and villages. The places that are destroyed may be forced to return to old customs for survival.

  33. Many different kinds of diasters could have taken place to cause the primitive state of Gathering Blue's civilization. Earthquakes and volcanos could have become overly active. THEY may have caused deep fractures into the earth and burned the surface.Tsunamis may have started to flood the land from all angles. The people could have run from THEM but then been wiped off the face of the earth. Many, many catastrophes could have taken place to return the Gathering Blue's civilization back to the survival stage of life.

  36. I think that catastrophes such as the ones in 2012 could destroy a civilization. People had to suffer through earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and my least favorite, tsunamis! Only a few of them survived and those are the ones who got on the ships. I think that those would be the guardians since they can read and know everything about what happen before the ruins. Manmade causes could have happen too. There could have been a nuclear explosion or other sort of high technical bomb, some sort of war could have broken out and destroyed everything in its path. There are millions of possibilities but those are some that people could barely live through.

  39. I think that war between humans could do that if it got that intense. Also, natural catastrophes (disasters) could obliterate a whole civilization. They could be like Mega Tsunamis, Super Volcanoes, and Mega Earthquakes. Also, if aliens came and completely devastated the human race. Ha ha sorry that last one was for fun.

  49. A catastrophe that could have changed the civilization could be a major earthquake. This is because a lot of people could become homeless. A lot of people would have to rebuild their houses and most of the civilization. Also the same thing could happen with a flood people’s houses would be destroyed. THAT would be very hard to recover from. Destruction could cause everything that WE have now to be destroyed and we would have to start civilization all over from scratch.

  74. I think that natrual disasters could be global warming. The sun warms the earth and melts ice caps where some people live. This threatens marine life, human life, and animals everywhere. Polar animals have to watch out because they live on ice also. Another catatrophy could be a hurricane. This causes the earth to shake and the surface to give away. Building colapse and so do bridges. These cause many of deaths and many people who survived would often move to a more safe place. People are aghast at these horrible destructions.
